Light of the World

Listening Guide

What does it mean to be the light of the world? Matthew 5:14-16
  1. Light symbolizes truth: The gospel exposes the falsehood of the world and as we live as the light of the world, we allow the gospel to dispel the myths and pervasive secular worldview(s) with truth of the gospel.
  2. Light symbolizes hope: We live in full-view of the hope we have in God’s purpose.
  3. Light serves a purpose: We live intentionally as a representative of the gospel to a lost and broken world.
But it’s more than Jesus simply saying, “You have the truth and you have this hope, and you should live in light of that hope and hold it up to the world.” Jesus is also leading us to be a counterculture, that the way you’re the light of the world is not just by what you say, not just giving people the truth, but how you live your life, in particular as a society.

Discussion Guide

  1. What does it mean to live counter-culturally as a light to the world?
  2. How is God calling me in this season of life to be a light to the world?
  3. Why is it so easy to be the light of the world passively, when God so clearly calls us to be actively the light of the world? Are you able to discern times in your life where you’re more passive vs more active? How could you be more intentional?
