TAPESTRY PRAYS – OCTOBER 20, 2016

DEVOTIONAL: “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes”. Psalm 19:7-8, ESV.

CHALLENGE: When we do not know how to pray we can still go to God in prayer. Prayer can and should “flow directly from the heart. No script is necessary. Nothing prescribed or recited. Prayer is personal. Completely unique.” Yet, at times we as Christians find praying to be one of the most difficult things to do. Why?

How is your Bible reading going? (I confess that I find even this hard to maintain.)

Kendrick links the two, prayer and Scripture. He says, “Perhaps the first and most comprehensive guide of all is to pray to God using the very words He’s already spoken in His Word.” The Bible is full of prayers, (e.g.: Psalms, Gospels, and Paul’s epistles).

“God will guide you as you seek Him. Because what you find as you begin devoting yourself to reading, studying, and meditating on the Word is that the Holy Spirit quickly begins causing Scripture to be ‘implanted’ in your heart (James 1:21).”

The key to praying the Scripture and allowing the Holy Spirit to bring various verses to your mind is to be in God’s Holy Word. The more we read and re-read the more Scripture can come as second nature to us as we pray and as we evangelize.

This week I will give you a direct challenge: take time each day to read a chapter or two from the Bible. Take time to pray. Take note how one affects the other, and what God is doing in and through you and the church.
